Biography: Robert Ellis began practicing law in 1998 as an Assistant Public Defender in Palatka, Florida handling hundreds of criminal cases and a myriad of DUI cases. As a former public defender, he was trial counsel at both criminal jury and criminal bench trials. After leaving the Public Defender’s Office, Mr. Ellis defended civil liability claims in Jacksonville, Florida representing corporate clients such as Amoco/BP, General Motors, Progressive and GMAC. He also has extensive experience in personal injury and worker’s compensation cases. In 2007, he left a 400+ lawyer civil trial firm to begin his own practice.

In summary, some cases/legal matters include:

  • Obtained summary judgment in highly publicized federal civil rights claim in favor of client. Prior to this result, the opposing party was demanding $1,000,000.00 for settlement.
  • DUI Cases: Obtained not guilty verdict and suppression of evidence in cases where clients had submitted to breadth tests and a field sobriety test.
  • Obtained judgment of acquittal at trial in favor of client wrongfully charged with cruelty to animals. After hearing argument that the evidence failed to support the charges, the court agreed that there was insufficient evidence to prove the client was guilty of abuse and dismissed the case.
  • Obtained judgment of acquittal at trial in favor of mother wrongfully charged with child abuse. After hearing argument that the evidence failed to support the charges, the court agreed that the mother’s discipline of her child was not abusive.
  • Obtained worker’s compensation award at trial of case for injured client that severed his fingers while working for a contractor that wrongfully denied the client was an employee. As a result, the client was provided with lost wages and medical benefits that had been wrongfully denied by his former employer.
  • Obtained a dismissal of a money judgment that had been entered by a national equipment supplier against my client’s fast food restaurant chain. As a result, the restaurant chain was able to settle the case for a nominal amount well below the amount claimed in the judgment.
  • Obtained summary judgment in federal employment action under Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Title VII of the U.S. Constitution. As a result, the company was able to settle this federal case for an amount acceptable to the company without having to bear the costly expense of trial.

Personal: Robert Ellis was born in Jacksonville, Florida in 1970. His interests include running where he finished 12th in the state of Florida (Four A Division) as a high school cross country runner and competed at the collegiate level (NCAA Division I) for the University of South Florida Cross Country team. He remains an avid runner. As a volunteer mentor for Inside/Outside, a Jailed Juvenile Justice Program, Mr. Ellis serves as a member of the Board of Directors. He has also served as coach for the Jacksonville Beach Recreation Association and as an officer with the YMCA Adventure Guides/Indian Princess Youth Program. He lives at the beach with his wife and two children.
